This short walkthrough will tell you how to reach both endings of my short visual novel RE:BURN.
When you start the game, you’ll see an inbox full of emails. The very top one, “BURN Email” from Steven Massey, gives you instructions about logging in to a different email account. Once you’ve read that email, you can click the “log out” button on the bottom of the screen, but first you should read any other emails that you’re interested in, since you won’t be able to switch accounts again later.
Log into the other email account with the email and password that Steven told you: burn@blackburn.ca and burn123. You will then be prompted to change your password; it can be anything with 20 characters or less as long as it’s not the same as the old password. (Feel free to just keypound—you don’t actually have to remember it.)
Once you’re in the new account, you may notice a little notification that says “checkpoint reached.” The game doesn’t have a manual save/load system, but you can access any the checkpoints you unlock from the menu if you want to go back later. Delete the four emails in the inbox like Steven told you to do (but read them first if you don’t want to miss information that might be important for understanding the story!), and you’ll get your first instant message from Morgan. After speaking to Morgan, you’ll be back in the inbox with five new emails, one of which is from your friend Bianca.
For the next little while, the game follows the same pattern. You’ll need to reply to all new emails from Bianca and delete all new emails from other people, in between conversations with Morgan. There’s a slight variation on that when you get an email from Bianca called “News Article,” which asks if you’ve read an article she sent you. You’ll need to read the email below it, “Bianca Pompeo Has Shared an Article,” before you can reply and proceed as normal.
Things have the potential to change at the point when your inbox has an email from Bianca called “Your Boss.” The checkpoint in the menu for this part is also called “Your Boss,” if you want to revisit it and explore your options. As Morgan will have urged you to do in the conversation just prior to this, you have the option to start replying to all of the emails instead of deleting them. If you reply to all of the emails in the inbox and don’t delete any of them, you’ll be on Morgan’s route. You’ll get to Ruby’s route instead if you reply to Bianca, read the other four emails, and delete at least one of them.
On Morgan’s route, you’ll lose the option to delete anything, and you’ll have to keep replying to all the emails until the end. On Ruby’s route, you’ll lose the option to reply to anyone other than Bianca, and you’ll have to keep replying to Bianca and deleting all other emails until the end. Once you’ve reached at least one ending, you’ll also be able to see my author’s notes in the menu, and read a bit of background about the creative process behind the game.
